Mind jumping palooza - plotting post

I've talked about this vaguely on plurk, but I figure I'll post about it here as well. Next month Lili plans on doing some mind jumping. i.e using her psychic abilities to go into people's minds and poke around. She wants to exercise her mental muscles as well as peer at the minds of the Meadous. She'll sort emotional baggage, clear cobwebs, find memory vaults and sort out any maina's.

What this means for you if you sign your character up- players get to create their character's mindscapes. Here are some examples of various minds in Psychonauts. Hopefully those give you some idea of what character's minds can be like.

Keep in mind (ahaha, word play!) a version of your character can be present during the psychic shenanigans, but they won't be aware of why Lili is there/possibly who she is. Only strong psychics who have 100% control of their minds are completely aware of intruders/visitors. Along with that, in psychonauts terms, the human mind also is likely to try and eject Lili anyway possible. So feel free to have your character's Censors try to throw her out or have a Personal Demons blow up on her. It's fully possible for Lili to be ejected out of a mind.

Lili will post an ad on the bulletin board about it for willing participants. If you think your character would want to be a part of this, leave a comment here! (as well as the eventual bulletin board post!) Lets plan on how badly or how well Lili can handle this!

If you have any questions, lay them on me here! Consider this a sign up post and general plotting place. Feel free to drop a comment in here with your character's mental landscape or chat with me about what you want to do.

OKAY, so I did a lot of thinking and Makoto's mindscape is a multi-story shop that's full of thorns from the Hedge, the censors are youma, and there's hm probably three or so memory vaults in there. I'm working on a doc like Terri's for Bertie.

Sign-up. I don't want to be too heavy-handed about Equius' exciting variety of mental issues, but it looks like it could be lots of fun! And a great CR experience between the worst bro/sis pair ever.

Definitely interested! Dustin would just need a bit of a nudge from Zoe (either that Lili is helping her or she'll be directly involved), so as long as that's possible he's in! If so, I'll work on a mindscape description soon.
scruffy_mcjackass: (let me speak at you)

[personal profile] scruffy_mcjackass 2014-09-03 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
HOKAY I think I can sit down and write this in confidence now, knowing what kind of mindset Dustin will be in when Lili decides to go poking around in there. I can say for sure, after Goatnapping, Dustin will not approve of Lili's intervention, but he'll be a little broken and will probably need it. I figure, sorting out some of Dustin's more obvious manias will be a good test!

Several reasons for this: Primarily, Element-verse has a lot to do with mindscapes to begin with, and as Zoe's already seen, Dustin has a tight hold on his own. He's been trained to be self-aware of his mind and will have a lot of traps to get through, at least on the outer layers. Thankfully (or possibly for the worse?) Dustin's mind will be in a bit more disarray following the trial/pranks, so that should make getting into the inner layers easier, albeit a touch more dangerous, I think.

Anyway, the actual description! What Zoe saw was when Dustin's actively meditating, and is more akin to how the typical Element-verse mindscape works. When he's asleep/not-so-organized, I figure Lili's interpretation of the mind (i.e. Psychonauts-verse mindscape) will take over when she enters.

Dustin's brainspace takes the form of a large city--at least, from the outside. Entering should deposit Lili on the outskirts, where the many overpasses and smaller multi-story complexes create a complicated maze that has distinctly non-euclidean geometry. Save a multitude of alarmingly-militarized censors, hiding in the buildings and inside convenient dumpsters/boxes/cars, the city is eerily empty and quiet. The censors conduct strategic attacks on any who enter with complicated traps that use the strange landscape to their advantage; however, with Dustin's mind in relative disarray, almost none of them will work correctly, leaving the censors to their own (ineffective) devices. Navigating the maze without them should be a lot easier.

The inner mindscape, interestingly enough, does not lead to a downtown--instead it opens to a tiny coastal shipping settlement, compact and with many narrow passages that all lead to the ocean. Dustin will be on the docks with a brightly-colored orb of fluctuating threads, much like the wall of memories that Zoe found, only a lot smaller. He'll be distracted trying to fix up his old motorcycle, which is in severe disrepair and stays that way, much to Dustin's frustration. He requires a specific tool that's hidden somewhere in the town; finding it means he'll finally be able to fix his bike, and presumably solve his repressed fear of driving (among other things). Actually finding the tool means scouring the town, which involves lots of very dark spots with scary things (mostly Shades, occasionally baggage) hiding in them and, eventually, prying it from an older Dustin's bloodied hand(s). Dustin keeps most of his memories closely-guarded, but there's one memory vault running about that keeps the earliest thing he can remember.

Okay wow that's enough tl;dr for a long time, I hope this works! If you need me to explain anything else, I'll do what I can!

Finally found the Plurk where I was talking about psychonaut dreamscapes, so I'll sign Bertie up for this! He'll be in the middle of his jaunt with a lack of inhibitions, so that should make his mindscape fairly chaotic. It is a train with different cars representing aspects of him. She'll find a raucous party going on as the train barrels wildly along in a circle around a pastoral landscape interspersed with forests.

What I have from that Plurk off-hand, there is:

- a car dedicated to great literature, dictionaries, and thesauri with half the pages ripped out and scatters;
- a car for music with everything plastered with sheet music, a car for broken bicycles and broken weapons;
- a car for alcohol;
- a car that looks like a training ground;
- a car with boxes that are labeled and contain objects representing all of the people he knows
- the very last car, which contains everything bad that Bertie tries to keep locked up, like vaults containing reels of memories with being attacked or berated, ripped out pages about sin from the Bible, the shadowy figments of Underlings, newspaper clippings from Oscar Wilde's trial, Ienzo's bloody labcoat, Jay's severed legs, the White Queen's body, and pieces from Ammond's wreckage from the Black King fight. The Beast is in there, too. It looks a little like Mika when she was getting snarly at him and opening her jaw too wide. There are lots of teeth, claws, and a rail thin form. The car set up like a mini-court room with the things set up in the jury box. These are basically all Personal Demons and will blow-up if touched.

The last car is usually locked up tight, but it would not be for Bertie in his inhibition-free state! Instead, Lili would get to enjoy the possibility of Bertie's personal demons roaming and actively trying to blow her up. The 'inhabitants' of his mind are little corgis in fancy suits and flapper dresses. Bertie would be there in the car with the boxes. He's usually to be found trying to sort through them, but he would be complacent and just hanging about with most of the boxes upturned on the floor thanks to the train jostling.

The censors are little ticket-checker men!

It's a good bug that I wish I'd caught earlier! Also, as for what Lili might want to do in Bertie's head, there are a couple of options. 'Monday' just so happens to coincide with the last day of the inhibitions plot on the 15th if she actually wanted to try to fix his mind more or less barreling out of control rather than waiting for Zephyr.

Otherwise, there's cobwebs galore, the mentioned personal demons, just tidying up his cars so they aren't such complete messes. Helping him sort emotional baggage about things like his friends at home not caring that he's gone, the dust up he had with Jay about being 'useless,' or his problem with carapace creatures.

Or there's always getting chucked out of his head because it's out of control at the moment. 8D

[personal profile] platitudeparlance 2014-09-02 07:23 am (UTC)(link)
Signing Rhyme up!

Her mindscape looks like the streets of a city, but there's a forced perspective effect that makes it look as though the buildings are looming over visitors. The buildings don't seem to belong in the same city, though - there's gothic cathedrals next to suburban houses next to giant malls covered in neon signs. Most of these buildings look different on the inside than one might expect - the comfortable suburban home is grayed out and almost too bright, the cathedral is warm and contains tea tables, pianos, and photos of people Rhyme knew from the Medium.

The city's residents are multicolored and vibrant but nonspecific: faceless archetypes of citydwellers. Her censors skate, descending rapidly and circling enemies.

Noise just barely quieter than overwhelming permeates the city. Different strains of music can be heard, some more modern and electronic, some more antiquated. The chapel sounds like jazz and swing music. The house is buzzing white noise.

The house has a memory vault that shows Beat (her brother) arguing with their parents while Rhyme's curled up, clearly trying not to notice. Personal Demons are commonly found nearby. There's another memory vault near some rails that has them skating together.

Finally, there's a bridge underpass which seems unusually in perspective. The barrage of sound slowly quiets down when it is approached, until it reaches complete silence by the side of the road. In the middle of the road, there's a memory vault that contains Rhyme's memories of following Beat across and getting hit by a car. If Lili pays attention, she'll notice that Beat tried to push her out of the way but fell on top instead. Other memories might be hidden around, but those are the ones likely to stand out.

A younger version of Rhyme whose clothes are even more comically oversized can be found around corners, but she tends to be skittish. The best place to find her for communication purposes is the chapel - she finds it comforting. If confronted in the house, she'll freeze or hide until left alone.

Lili is more than welcome to come in and do some easy cleanup, there's plenty of cobwebs, baggage, and memory vaults to find.

Mika had been going to Sasha for most of the heavy work in The Twisting Hall, and he's helped out enough that her Censors have a better chance of going claw-to-claw with her problems and so the Onryou will be less of a threat. The Safe House is where Mika's apartment 434 was and her time in the Meadous has effected her enough that the whole apartment has become her hobbit hole house, and has an entrance into the safety of the sunlit garden for Lili to escape to if she needs it. Mika's mental appearance will always want to help someone trapped in the apartments with her, so she'll always have someone to lead her to somewhere safer.

However, the door that leads to Mika's bedroom is covered with red tape and holds a memory vault, and Personal Demons will spring up if Lili breaks the seal. Mika has a lot of cobwebs that need cleaning and quite a bit of baggage scattered around The Twisted hall.

Mika's Safe House (Mika's Meadous house)
- Well lit from sunlight
- Pictures and ornaments representing friends cover the walls
- Backdoor opens out into the Meadous proper
- The bedroom opens into Apartment 434, and is rotting

Apartment 434
- Walls, ceiling and floor are covered in a spiderweb red tape
- Bed is a spindly metal frame with a rotting mattress on it
- Doorknob is icy to the touch and the whole room is moldy from water damage
- Emotional baggage lurks under the bed, a memory vault in the closet, and personal demons chattering away everywhere

The Twisting Hall
- Seemingly endless hallways of the Jigoku Apartments
- Architecture is malevolent and tries to trip and confuse, the walls breathe and bleed
- Censors prowl and chase down the Onryou in the halls
- Specific other apartments can be broken into easily and will hold more baggage or vaults, these have red tape on the doorframes
- The hallway will take twists and turns that actively try to mess with your sense of direction and tend to change even as it's being traversed
- Eventually comes to the stairwell that leads into Jigoku proper

Hell Frozen Over
- Jigoku proper is fairly dangerous, but less so than the apartments
- Censors can be heard long before they're seen, but will usually rush clean past Lili in order to attack the prowling Onyrou
- The path to the lake is completely blocked off, and Mika will refuse to go anywhere near it, physically dragging Lili away in a panic if she has to
- The hardware store, hospital, market, and mall all have emotional baggage tucked outside but Mika will refuse to go inside
- The hardware store and hospital both have memory vaults

Onryou are not a natural part of Mika's mental landscape! They're manifestations of her curse and will attack everything, but Mika's wolflike Censors are healthier than they've been in some time and at the top of their game trying to beat back the possession. Therefore they will always see the Onyrou as a greater threat than Lili, and will move over/around her to get to them. Whatever natural denizens were in Mika's mental landscape have been corrupted, destroyed, or are currently in hiding until the Onryou have been removed completely.

Mika's Memorial Wall

[personal profile] wolfishsurvivalist 2014-09-06 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
This wall is both short and very long. At a glance it's only as long as the actual hallway in Mika's Meadous house, and as you walk along it, it only seems to be that long. It is actually long enough for there to be portraits of all the important people in her life, or people she considers to be friends. The people she's closest to or know best have bigger portraits, with more detail. All of the portraits seem to be somewhere between hand drawn on handmade paper or photographs, but since this is the mind and not a real place, it doesn't seem odd. All the frames around these portraits are organic shapes of wood, as if the frame grew around the portrait itself, and as such no two frames are exactly alike. Some are pale wood, others are deep mahogany, it depends on the person.

The portraits of Mika's family are not separate, but rather one big group portrait furthest from the door, almost a part of the wall itself. There's a recessed alcove below the portrait, and above hangs a wolf's skull with carved designs etched into the bone, with black and sepia rubbed into the design. It's a very stylized version of Mika's family markings that she would have worn in the traditional body paint at high howling events. In the alcove beneath it are lit candles, a pair of glasses, bits of antler, disks of wood, a smoking sage smudge, and a small collection of chips from precious stones in a variety of colors.

The Portrait Gallery
Jigoku portraits:
+ Dante, Son of Sparda (DMC4) - beneath his portrait hangs his amulet, with small versions of his swords hanging from the chain.
+ Rubi Malone (WET) - Under her portrait is a small six-shooter that she'd given to Mika
+ Seth Aurellia (OC) - a glittering star-shaped bauble that seems to shift between red and gold, with black feathers fanning the right side

Meadous portraits:
+ Eddie and Sasha - Their portrait is a similar size to the Jigoku portraits and the picture of Mika's family. The Ormagöden buckle hangs beneath it, with a small circle of stained glass hangs above, the pattern looks like the markings on Sasha's mind portal
+ Lili - Her portrait hangs on Sasha's side, with a stemless rose that matches the color of her hair beneath it, the leaves forming a clockwise spiral
+ Jay - A blue/green fire opal, with a spray of matching feathers, some are curled peacock plumes. Bound to Dist's portrait with scarlet and teal jeweled threads.
+ Dist - A small sprig sprouting cherry blossoms, bound to Jay's portrait with scarlet and teal jeweled threads.
+ Bertie - A small straw boater hat hangs from the frame as if someone hooked it on. Tied to Ienzo's portrait with strings of blue and burgundy thread.
+ Ienzo - A deep burgundy fabric bookmark hangs from it like a banner, a heart symbol is embroidered onto it in silver thread, with silver embellishments wrapping up the sides. Tied to Bertie's portrait with jeweled threads of blue and burgundy.
+ Ammond - A 0 gauge earring with a yellow ball, a scrap of mustard-yellow fabric is tied to it
+ Murai - a flat wood carving of a stylized rat's head with feathered wings on each side
+ Kain Highwind - A small version of the holy lance hangs beneath it, silvery jeweled cord holding it up at both ends
+ Terezi - Strips of red and teal fabric hang from the bottom of the frame, tied unevenly on both sides and in the middle
+ Natalie - A bloodstone cabochon with ebony batwings hangs from hers, bound to Hajime's portrait with dark red and green jeweled thread
+ Hajime - A small charm of a camera as well as a generic sentai transformation amulet, bound to Natalie's portrait in dark red and bright green thread
+ Justin - A stylized guillotine charm, with red and blue thread binding his portrait to Grell's
+ Grell - Cords of red hang from her portrait in loops, the jewels hanging from her cords are red and green. Bound to Justin's portrait with red and blue jeweled threads
+ Zoe - A miniature version of her rifle is hung from her portrait with leather straps
+ Equius - A charm of a hunting bow with several arrows dangling from it, hung by an antiqued bronze chain
+ Riku - His keyblade, with a small copy of Kairi's charm hanging from the hilt, tied together by a sky blue ribbon
+ Berri - A vine has sprouted from her portrait, with a MiracleBerry growing from it

God Family Portraits
+ Warren - A carving of a kitsune hangs from it, with green and tan ribbons tied about it and beaded with green glass beads shaped like leaves
+ Kelt - The wolf mask Mika made for her hangs beneath her portrait, the frame sprouting green leaves
+ Zephyr - One of the larger portraits on the wall, with little fairy lights hanging in the air to illuminate it. The frame is currently sprouting grasses and summer seasonal wildflowers, with little vines gripping crayons sprouting from the bottom edge. A few of Zephyr's pinion feathers seem to be caught in the grasses of the frame.

Signing Hajime up for this some time after Lili does the mind jumping with Natalie, and I'm still working out how the mindscape is going to go. (Lots of playing cards and insects, I'd imagine...)

Lili will get to discover that he is older than he appears, at least. By a lot. A lot a lot. Ten thousand years a lot. 8D
chalicejoker: (Huh)

[personal profile] chalicejoker 2014-09-05 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
Yes good he will protest once or twice, but mostly try to ignore it.

And I have a mindscape kinda-sorta set up, though I just did this after having to work late which gives it about a 50/50 chance of being really awesome or really needing work. 8D

So Hajime's mindscape is set up like a very old, very dark labyrinth. Some areas have torches on the walls, others have rickety electric lights, single lightbulbs hanging off of wires. Following the torches leads to older memories, while the lightbulbs will lead to more recent ones. The older walls are lined with flaking cave paintings of strange, spiked monsters, and the newer ones have random photographs taped up everywhere.

The older areas are pretty clogged with mental cobwebs and full of censors--they're pretty much representative of his memories as an Undead fighting in the Battle Royale ten thousand years ago. In the older areas, there's a dungeon of some sort, a room with a heavy barred door. Inside is a large stone slab carved to look like a giant playing card, and it looks like something was once chained to the slab with heavy iron chains. There is, however, nothing there anymore. There are, notably, no cobwebs in or around the dungeon. It's old, but the area's been used recently.

Every now and then, the labyrinth will open up into a room. Most of them look like photography studios, though they'll have slight differences reflecting all the studios he's gone through since leaving home, and it's very easy to find photographs of his loved ones in there. There's also another room that looks like a small, family-run restaurant--it's the Jacaranda, the restaurant he lived at back home. Wandering for too long in the labyrinth will inevitably lead back to that spot. At one point, the labyrinth will open into a forest clearing. In the middle of the clearing is an imprint as though a large, skinny, and heavy rectangular object once sat there, but no object remains.

Hajime's censors are just variations on Chalice, his Rider form, while his personal demons resemble normal Darkroaches--they're aggressive and don't chirp. The normal inhabitants of Hajime's mind are actually various generic Kamen Rider knockoffs with cameras. Mostly, they're just prowling through the labyrinth looking for...something. But sometimes they stop and take selfies or can be found developing photos in one of the photography studios. Don't go into a darkroom if the red light is on outside the door--they'll get upset.

Hajime will actually be a bit friendlier than he is in real life--because oh my gosh he's human and that being entirely human is actually really exciting even if he never really gives voice to that enthusiasm (or even knows how to do that) in real life and his subconscious isn't quite as concerned about appearances. He feels things now, and it's great! But he'll also kind of be a pest and follow Lili around, because hey, this place is kind of dangerous and you don't want to be hanging around here in case Joker ever comes back. He's mostly dressed as the Human Undead might be back home, which means he's got a pair of pants on. And that's it, because that's how Human Undead rolled. No belt, because humans don't need belts the way Undead do. Bringing him near the dungeon mentioned earlier will probably get him talking about how he's glad Joker's gone, because he'd be chained in there while Joker was loose. Talking about Joker for too long will draw Censors pretty quickly.

There are two Memory Vaults Lili might come across:
- The time Hajime met a dying human in the mountains, and the human gave him a family photo and begged Hajime to look after them.
- The memory of the time he freaked out on Bertie after Bertie wished Natalie human. He is not proud of turning into a very angry bugmonster and throwing a freaked-out Englishman into a snowdrift, but what's done is done.

Belated sign up! I've already pondered a bit on Natalie's mindscape, though I'd have to shovel through old Plurks to track it down and it might be best just to do it up from scratch. Or at least point form.

- It's a big moonlit garden, with occasional drifts of dramatic fog. Cobblestone paths, wrought iron gates, marble statues, kind of excessively goth overall.
- In the center of the garden there's a walled-in stone pen with its gate busted open. Inside are empty manacles and chains and scrapes in the walls as though some big clawed monster was kept in there. Also, some of the trees and walls elsewhere in the garden have similar claw marks....
- Things are very, very cobwebby in the areas that deal with Natalie's human life, and more specifically her family.
- The statues in the garden are generally representative of people that she has known well enough to give some kind of a damn about, be it positive or negative. Sometimes enough prodding will make them react, though it might just be to take a lumbering swing at you before going back to being all statue-y.
- Natalie herself is a girl/young teenager, wandering around in a dirty dress and barefoot, all Ophelia-style. She's very concerned about finding Father. And also, have you seen her Beast? Her Beast is very important. She misses it. Even if it was mean sometimes.
- The inhabitants of her mind are mostly low-rent vampires. Suits and cloaks, trampy dresses, too much eyeliner, etc etc, very stereotypical. There are also some alarmingly large bugs skittering around. They're black and green and roachy, and run for cover when they're spotted. Sometimes Natalie's mind-self tries to chase the bugs down. She usually runs from the vampires.
- Her censors likely resemble garden gnomes.
- Her memory vaults may actually be coffin-like.

Since there seems to be the possibility for a mind to have two memory vaults, here's two memories that they can contain!

1 - The memory of when she was 'sacrificed' in front of Father's cult and turned into a vampire.
2 - The memory of just after fleeing Mayfield, staggering out the back of a car trunk, finding Hajime, and the awkward conversation where it's pointed out that "this house doesn't need windows..." Which is to say both of them mostly admitting they want to be together.

As for something worthwhile for Lili to pick apart, she could always try to help Natalie find Father. Thing is, while there's a great big statue of a skull-faced guy that she's very sure is the right guy, if Lili digs deep enough into the Actual Family Stuff, wherever it's bolted up, she could pull some very thick cobwebs off of her real Father. It would probably serve to take some of the edge off of her twitchy obsession with her sire.

Let me know if there's anything that I'm missing or that I should elaborate on!

I'm signing up for this Ienzo's mind isn't nearly as hardmode as Mika's but boy I hope you like trying not to be eaten by a grue Lili.

Ienzo's mindscape is a large library. There are numerous light fixtures - mostly ornate sconces and chandeliers and lamps - but only some of them work, and the skylights and windows present in some rooms look out only into starry void. Illumination in the large stretches between the working lights is provided entirely by hearts in jars (Valentine's hearts as opposed to the more organic kind, glowing faintly pink and glittering) serving as book-ends. There is one central room in the library, looking much like this but wider, so that the central area is square, and taller, with about four floors of balconies overlooking the center. The central area is filled with rows of desks and chairs, most of which are immaculately clean and organized, but some of which have papers covered in notes strewn over them. There are lamps on all of the desks, but maybe one of them works.

There are four wings of the library, each of which is a long hallway like the one pictured above branching off from the main part to the north, south, east, and west. Most of them are just more of the same - poorly lit and full of books, but the one to the west is Dark. There are no light sources in that wing, and unblinking yellow eyes stare out from it. Gold text on the arch leading into it reads "I HAVE BECOME DEATH, DESTROYER OF WORLDS" in English. It is the only English signage in the whole mindscape. Looming, pitch-black figures sometimes ooze into the rest of the library from here. Try to avoid them.

At the end of the eastern wing, however, there's a smaller, less grandiose door tucked away in a corner that leads into a room that looks more like this, but smaller and a bit cluttered, in a homey sort of way. The windows still look out into void, but the lamps work and there are golden tealights strung along the ceiling and the bannisters.

The north wing is lined not with bookshelves, but with portraits. The largest by far is one of Ansem the Wise, taller than a man and ornately framed. The table under it is covered in fresh flowers, like a memorial. His portrait is flanked by smaller paintings of the other apprentices, Ienzo included. Aeleus, Dilan, Braig, and Even are present, but Xehanort's has a large gash sliced directly through his face on the canvas. Other, more reasonably sized portraits line the walls leading up to these.

The south wing has glass cases, like a museum. Whirring mechanical devices, figurines and artefacts from different worlds, half of a violin, miscellaneous things all neatly displayed. It is oddly dusty compared to the rest of the library. Lili will probably find almost all of the cobwebs here, though there are fewer in Ienzo's mind than most.

Censors have dumb squiggly antennae and glowing yellow eyes. Ienzo appears as a librarian patrolling the aisles and carrying a lantern. There is baggage everywhere. So much of it. Mostly crammed under desks or on top of bookshelves or other inconvenient places. Memory vaults are similarly cowering in various nooks and crannies. It'll take some searching to get at them.
